why we're less sweet, on purpose

by naturally, 16 Sep 2026

Most protein powder tastes like dessert. That is a choice someone made, and it is worth understanding why before you decide whether you want it.

Sweetness is usually covering something

Plant protein has a taste. Pea carries an earthiness. Sorghum has a grain note. Left alone, they taste like what they are, which is food.

The industry answer is to bury it. Heavy sweeteners, loud flavouring, a finish that reads like a milkshake. It works, in the sense that the first scoop is pleasant. It also means you are drinking something built to hide its own ingredients.

We went the other way. Stevia, used lightly. 0.34 grams of sugar a serving. Enough to round the edges, not enough to turn a daily habit into a dessert.

What that means in the glass

If you are coming off a candy-sweet powder, the first scoop reads plain. That is the honest reaction and we would rather say it than pretend otherwise. Give it a week.

What you get back is range. A shake that is not shouting over everything else. It goes into oats without turning them into pudding. Into a smoothie without flattening the fruit. Into banana bread without tasting like frosting.

And if you want it sweeter, you add the sweetness yourself. Half a banana. A spoon of honey. Two dates in the blender. You control it, which you cannot do with a powder that arrives at maximum.

The longer reason

Sweet trains you to want sweeter. A powder you drink every day for a year is a habit, not a treat, and habits built on sugar are harder to keep than habits built on food.

Less sweet, on purpose, is a decision about what this is for. It is protein. It should taste like the good version of itself, then get out of the way.
